BY-LAWS OF THE PICKAWAY COUNTY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

ARTICLE I - MEMBERSHIP

Section I. The following standards shall be used in determining eligibility for membership.

1. SCHOLARSHIP -- 60 Points
A. Membership in the Pickaway Honor Society shall be determined by grades in all subjects which
count toward graduation.
B. A pupil to be eligible for membership must have a point average of 3.25 or the average mandated
by the respective local district faculty council, effective beginning the graduation class of 1994.
*3.5 at Teays Valley.
C. Each school shall submit the point average of each pupil recommended to the General Committee.
point average shall mean the number of points made by the pupil at the end of the first semester of
the year in which he/she is recommended.

2. SERVICE -- 15 Points
A maximum of 15 points is to be allotted for service from which the local faculty may deduct as it sees fit
for the lack of participation in the following:
A. Athletics
B. Organizations
C. Scholastic Contests
D. Music
E. Extra-curricular activities
F. Special Services

3. LEADERSHIP -- 15 Points
A maximum of 15 points is to be allotted for leadership from which the local faculty may deduct as it sees
fit on the basis of the following:
A. Does the pupil wield a good influence on the other members of the class in class discussion?
B. Is the pupil a good follower; as well as a good leader, and does he/she cooperate with others?
C. Does he/she exert wholesome leadership by his/her own initiative at social functions of the class
or school?

4. CHARACTER -- 10 Points
A maximum of 10 points is to be allotted for character from which the local faculty may deduct any amount
which it feels the student in question lacks in regard to the following criteria to be concerned:
A. Irreproachable Conduct
B. Open Mindedness
C. Honesty
D. Courtesy
E. Promptness
F. Self-control
G. Altruism

5. A minimum of seventy-five (75) points is necessary for initiation into the Pickaway County National
Honor Society. A faculty council limited to five (5) members confirmed by the principal, plus the
advisor who serves as an ex-officio member, shall be responsible for controlling the election procedure and
hearing dismissal and appeal cases. The principal is not eligible to sit on the faculty council due to
his role in the “appeal process”.
Faculty are to rate only those students whom they know through classes, co-curricular, or community
activities. The fact that a faculty member does not know a student should not be grounds for down-rating
that student. Rather, the faculty member simply should not rate that student at all, making no entries in the
blank beside the student’s name.
