Renaissance Festival
On November 19, Teays Valley East Middle
School continued the tradition of holding a
Renaissance Festival, which was started at
Teays Valley Middle School in the mid-90’s.
The festival is organized each year by the
7th grade class.
According to TVEMS 7th grade teacher Patty
Truex, the Renaissance Festival celebrates
the middle ages time period, which is a
topic covered in 7th grade social studies.
The students plan the festival by working
in committees after returning from the
Ohio Renaissance Festival in Waynesville, in early October. The committees include crafts,
music, drama, food, games, costumes and publicity.
“It is a day when students can show family and friends what they have learned and give
others a taste of the that time in history,” Truex said.
Although the festival is similar each year, every one is unique due to the decisions made by
the students who plan it each year.
The teachers hope that the students not simply learn about the time period, but also gain life
skills such as working together, planning, problem solving and completing tasks that they
will always use.
“One of our favorite parts of the festival is the chance to pull the parents and the community
to the school and that was especially exciting this year because of the new building and the
beautiful outdoor setting for the event,” Truex said.
