Gifted Education

Gifted Program History

We have a long-standing tradition of recognizing and supporting the unique needs of students identified as gifted. The V.I.K.E.S. program was established in 1984 to serve students identified with superior cognitive ability. Today, the program supports third through fifth grade students who are identified in superior cognitive ability and in the academic areas of reading and/or math.

In addition to the VIKES program, students who are identified with specific academic abilities in mathematics, reading, or both receive enrichment services from a gifted-certified teacher within a cluster classroom setting.

  • For students identified in reading, instruction emphasizes independent learning, critical thinking, and the use of high-quality, increasingly complex literary and informational texts.

  • For students identified in math, instruction focuses on solving complex problems using multiple strategies, justifying conclusions, effectively communicating reasoning, and evaluating the reasoning of others.
